When nature provides a perfect food, why do we feel the need to mess with it?

What good is there in consuming a substance that has been manipulated beyond its original intent? What good is there in taking a large amount of one nutrient if all the other components necessary for its proper breakdown and utilization are missing in action? This is why self-medicating with a bunch of isolated synthetic supplements, over-the-counter drugs and prescription medications doesn't work - especially if we are in for the long-haul. More times than not, they actually complicate matters by creating further imbalances and additional problems. This is also why a lifetime of processed, refined and cooked food does not work. There are so many essential vitamins, minerals and enzymes that are fragile and heat sensitive. When unnecessarily messed with, these necessary nutrients become damaged or cooked out, leaving us with an incomplete tool box.

I cannot tell you how many times I have heard "I eat a good diet, but I still don't feel good." Then I find out that the person eats most all of their foods cooked to death, they rely on taking a bunch of isolated supplementation in the hopes of filling in the blanks, they don't get enough variety, they eat more processed and refined foods than they were initially aware of, and don't put much importance on eating organic and GMO free. It may appear on the surface that people are eating better and making better choices; but if the essential building blocks, phytonutrients, enzymes, catalysts and cofactors (which are all necessary for proper brain and body function) are getting stripped away or destroyed, then guess what? None of it makes a bit of difference.

How should this book be read to best obtain its message and purpose? A customer of Rawk Star Cafe asked this question, and because I felt it to be profound and relevant I decided to answer it for all. Although this book has many recipes, its intended purpose is to serve as a supportive guide - one that can shift the focus back towards the importance of health, quality over quantity, and true longevity. Therefore, this book is best read from beginning to end. In many parts of the book, my writing style is more casual and conversational. I will deliberately go off on a tangent, with the hopes of getting a point across. I also share many tips and tricks that cannot be appreciated if one is to skip and skim through. At first I was disappointed by not having an index, but in retrospect I now appreciate it. It will cause my readers to do a bit more digging and research, which ironically is exactly my intention.

If you are eager to start on the recipes, I ask that you at least read all of Chapter 6: Tools of the Trade and specific parts of Chapter 7: Rawlicious Recipes. Please be sure to read Blending Herbs and Spices (at the beginning of Chapter 7), as well as all the quick tips that precede each set of recipes.
